My problem was that I was already using my existing gmail adres as a login for Adsense. Since I also chose the same password, the system got confused when they started doing the account migration. If you have the same problem, change your Adsense password to something else than your Google Accounts password. Afterwards you can migrate your account.

This took a couple of emails to the Adsense helpdesk to sort out the issue. The fact that the Gmail spam filter systematically throws it's own Adsense emails in the Spam folder didn't help either.
All in all it's a pitty that Google has grown into a company so big that it no longer can align it's different business units. This makes them look stupid in the eyes of the user. After all, I expect that quite a lot of users will experience this same problem.
