How some manufacturers refuse to accept the reality of the internet

10 years ago we installed an expensive garagedoor opener from Hörmann. After 5 years, the handheld remote controls died but were never replaced. Today I set out to find a new set.

Replacement devices for my handheld transmitters on the old 40Mhz frequency were no longer available. An OEM replacement kit with 2 transmitters and a receiver on the newer frequency of 433Mhz costed more then €200. I went over to eBay and a few minutes later came up with a similar set for €40. Even better: this set included a second channel that allowed me to use the remotes to also switch on the garage lights after opening the garage door.

It is strange to see how old world manufacturers keep trying to ignore the reality of the internet and continue to push products through high margin distribution channels that add no value. Apparently, the fear for change is so big that they choose to silently disappear instead of embracing e-commerce.

  1. Hello Koen,

We were quite surprised to read your comments on the non-availability of the Hörmann 40 MHz transmitter.

It is true that Hörmann changed the remote control frequency some years ago, but 40 MHz transmitters are still on sale and can be ordered at your local Hörmann dealer. Suggested retail price for the small 4-button transmitter is € 44,00 (VAT excluded). So there's no need to buy an expensive OEM replacement kit...

  2. To start with I think it is fantastic that you're responding to this post, congratulations for spotting it and communicating so directly.
I didn't mean this post to be a rant and certainly not directed against Hörmann. The dealer I contacted probably wanted to sell a bigger kit then just the replacement transmitter.
BTW, is this transmitter available to order online?

  3. The transmitter cannot be ordered online.

Out of experience, we know that people are sometimes having difficulties trying to install an additional transmitter themselves. As a manufacturer of high quality garage doors and operators, we prefer to sell these products through a nationwide network of local specialists. We believe this to be the best suited distribution channel when offering "added values" like professional and personal advice, troublefree installation and reliable after sales services, all key factors in the success of our products.
