Sunax are not sunglasses, they're even better

After purchasing my Shoei Syncrotec 2 helmet, I envied motorcycle riders a bit who had those fancy built in sunglasses like in a Schubert C3. But now I found an even better alternative.

The problem with built in sunglasses is that when you pull them down, you're wearing sunglasses. This means that you don't see anything in parts of the road that are covered in shadow. A child running out of a house could easily escape your attention in your peripheral vision.

The people at Sunax have come up with an elegant solution: They manufacture a small strip of tinted plastic that you can slide between the external helmet case and the internal liner. This creates a strip of dark transparent material above your eyes, not in front of them. It works really well: the sky becomes dimmer and the sun no longer blinds you. The road is still visible since you don't look trough sunglasses. Sometimes you need to look directly into the sun. Most of the time this occurs during winter evenings, when the sun is very low. You just lower your head a bit and, voila, you look through the sunax sunshield as if it was a pair of sunglasses.

I do have to add that I had a small issue with the installation: it was rather difficult to insert the sunax deep enough inside the helmet. Therefore my first ride was not such a success: The sunax was much too low, causing me the go sit up straight end bend my neck backwards to try to look under the sunax instead of through it. After inserting the sunshield deeper (about 5mm lower then the top edge of my Pinlock inner visor) this was solved. Another thing you might want to check is that your outer visor needs to be adjusted, just like when you add a Pinlock. The reason is that sliding the Sunax under the liner slightly pushes up the rubber that seals the top of the visor. You need to give the visor a bit more slack using the adjustment screws on the side. Otherwise it won't close on the bottom seal and you will end up with a drafty helmet.

My helmet is now perfect, with a light grey Pinlock inner visor giving me a fog free and lightly dimmed image (so I can still see at night) and the Sunax giving me shade on my eyes when the sun is high, or giving me "emergency sunglasses" when the sun is very low or a driver blinds me with his high beams.

disclaimer: I do not have any affiliation with Sunax, Pinlock or Shoei. Just a happy customer!
