When Citylive started we decided to aim our initial development efforts towards Windows Mobile. This operating system doesn't have the highest marketshare, but it certainly provides a higher standard then the average Java phone.
In our user research done in www.i-city.be we soon learned what features are crucial to make a successfull widget platform. The Windows Mobile environment allowed us to make many small and fast iterations. You have to admit that Bill's boys did a great job in coming up with the .NET compact framework for mobile. Unlike Java, it provides a true "write once, run anywhere" environment, at least as long as it's Windows Mobile.
About 8 years ago, Sun promised us that Java for mobile phones would be the whalhalla for mobile developers. However, different screen sizes, variances in memory setup and fear to open up access to device functions like ringtones, sms and filesystem soon created a very diverse landscape of Java J2ME implementations.
Today the situation is somewhat better. Our own Java developers try to automatically adopt to the environment the application is running in. From what I can tell, it is working pretty nifty.
If you want to help us out in our endeavours to come up with the fanciest widget engine on earth, you can help us by downloading the test version of our Java proof of concept widget engine. Since there are countless devices we can use feedback from everyone with a Java MIDP 2.0 compatible device. A description of what you can do with this client and a video of what you should see are available in our forum.
Bericht publiceren
It would be nice if people posted their feedback on the forum. The more feedback, the sooner we can publicly release the mobile widget engine.
