1. you need a clean browser
Once you know how to install a proxy to get to the country-specific Google Play store, you're only halfway there. If you surf to play.google.com using a browser which had previously loaded the store from another country, you will not be able to shop there. Tip: close all of your incognito browser windows to make sure all cookies are erased. Then open a new incognito window and surf to the play store over your proxy of choice.2. you need a clean Google Account
You can browse to the Play store and put a product in your shopping cart without being logged in. But when you want to checkout you need to login. If you use an existing account which has previously been active in another country, your checkout will fail. Google will not inform you of the reason, but display a generic error screen as seen below.3. you need some luck with your credit card
I tried 5 different credit cards in total: 2 old Mastercards, 1 new Mastercard, 1 new Visa card and 1 American Express card. You need to enter the credit card data using a fake US or German (depending on what Play store you are buying in) address.
Only my new Mastercard and my new Visa card got accepted as a payment method. It is possible that the old cards didn't got accepted since I already used them with their (real) Belgian billing address in another Google account. My American Express card probably supports address verification and got rejected for that reason.
A small sidenote: I managed to use the same Mastercard in both the US and German Play store using 2 different Google accounts. Probably the Google Wallet credit card data only gets synced overnight for address check purposes.
4. pick the cheapest shipping address
To get a German shipping address I used mailboxde.com. It doesn't matter much which provider you choose. Just pay attention to their reates. For my US address I compared 2 options: Borderlinx and Comgateway. Comgateway is slightly cheaper, but the real problem is the Borderlinx shipping state. In the US, some state have a sales tax which will be calculated in your order when you ship to such a state. In the screenshot below you can see that my Borderlinx address was subjected to a sales tax. My Comgateway address was in a sales tax free state, so I chose this address.
Pricing in the US versus EU
Since I managed to get in 2 orders (1 in Germany and 1 in the US) I need to figure out which one to cancel. I'll attempt to make a cost calculation below.
Germany:
€ 358,99 receipt from Play store, including shipping to Germany
€ 2,8 mailbox.de service fee
€ 15,35 DHL shipping fee incl. insurance
= € 377
USA:
$ 369,92 receipt from Play store, including shipping to USA
$40 Comgateway shipping charge to Belgium
$2,6 insurance charge of 0,65% by Comgateway
$4,8 fuel surcharge
$21 duty 5%
$88 VAT 21%
$10 estimated DHL customs handling fee
$536 TOTAL
= €410
So it seems the US order will be €33 more expensive. Since it will also take longer, I will cancel the US order.
UPDATE 07/01/2013:
My Nexus 4 finally arrived. The total cost was €13,49 + €358,99 = €372,48

ReplyDeleteI had success using danish credit card and mailboxde.com
ReplyDeleteAny experience with mailboxde? Currently I'm more or less just gambling, but would love from someone who had a positive experience with them.
When will your unit be shipping? Looking forward to an update, mostly to calm my nerves. :)
my nexus 7 was delivered via them without any problem +- 1 week ago
Deleteyou get an email when it arrives and paying and forwarding went pretty quickly
am using it now for my nexus 4 - but Google hasn't sent it out yet
Thanks for the update!
ReplyDeleteIm planning on buying it from the German play store tomorrow, if it's still available.
I only have one question: Will everything work perfect if I use it in the Netherlands with an Dutch sim card? (updates etc.)
@thomas I never used mailbox.de before, but I found some positive comments on forums about them, so that's why I took the risk. My unit will only ship in 4 weeks, so I guess your nerves will be calmed down by them :)
ReplyDelete@tom No problem whatsoever to be expected. I ordered my Nexus One from the US before. In that case the only problem was to fit an adapter to the US power plug, but the software updates are always delivered, independent of the SIM card. It's an unlocked phone, so the SIM card doesn't matter.
Nice. Time to switch (maybe) from iPhone to Android
ReplyDeleteHi Koen,
ReplyDeleteGreat to read this blogpost.
I have just one question. You mentioned that only your new Visa card and new Mastercard did get accepted. I was wondering what you exactly mean by "new" Visa/Mastercard. Do you just mean that you did not use it before when buying something at Google (Play)? What kind of Visa card are you using if I may ask?
Thanks!
@HayoJB Indeed, by "new" I mean "not previously used with Google". The Visa and Mastercard are both issued by the Belgian bank KBC/CBC.
ReplyDeleteOkay, thanks!
ReplyDeletegreat having an update on this case. I ordered my nexus 4 (8GB) on FromUS2EU, a Dutch company in America that orders and ships to Europe. I paid €359, shipping included. Are the changes big that they open it at the douane and I have to pay 21% VAT?
ReplyDeleteThanks for the guide Koen! I just ordered mine through mailboxde as well.
ReplyDeleteDuring the checkout, I used a Mastercard that I already used previously with another Belgian google account though so it looks like you really have to be lucky with the card. My mastercard was issued by Argenta
great post koen! thanks for being my enabler! my nexus is on its way to mailboxde as we speak. (looks like i got lucky, ordered it wednesday, shipped thursday)
ReplyDeleteFelt a bit insecure about giving creditcard details through a proxy though, as well as using a service like mailboxde, which i never used before... but i send them a mail, and got a response that calmed me down :)
once again, thanks for explaining all this.
Wim, did you buy a 8GB or 16GB nexus 4 model? According to the shipping details, mine would only be shipped in 6 or 7 weeks.
DeleteI ordered a 16 Gb, with a 6-7 weeks queue as well. Which is why I was really surprised to see a mail from google the day after, confirming my device has been shipped. One day later (friday), it did arrive at mailboxde. My moneytransfer didn't even register yet by then! The package is now "ready to be send" with them. I hope to get it tomorrow. So all in all, that's less than a week wait time, rather than 6-7 :)
DeleteFYI: the 8Gb version was "out of stock" and I couldn't place an order at the time. Don't know how about now.
enjoy your device! :D
Amazing post, thank you for letting us know. I'd like to know, Koen, if you have received the Nexus 4, and if yes how long did all this process lasted, till you have the smartphone.
ReplyDeleteI'm actually living in France, but the Nexus 4 is always sold out in the play store web page. So I'm thinking going with your way!
ReplyDeleteFYI: I received my phone today, 9 days after ordering it with google. Note that the majority of this time, the phone was being shipped from mailboxde to belgium though. (7 days, inc weekend). It was posted in zittau monday evening.
ReplyDeleteThe bank transfer to mailboxde took 2 days to register
ReplyDeleteIt seems that you can use your own account. I just ordered nexus4 without any problem (order accepted, cash sent).
ReplyDeleteWaiting for my phone..
Thank you for this tutorial. It's priceless!
Unbelievable, I made a new account used shellfire VPN (TIP: the german ip is free) and my creditcard & adress are accepted but after a while (first order-time 29/01/2013) I got a mail (07/02/2013 - 10 days later...) that my google wallet account is closed and that I need to prove blablabla...
ReplyDeleteI'm using a KBC VISA Vision (uitgiftedatum 05/2012).
I asked KBC and they do not give an address details and it still got bounced.
Well the 7th when it got bounced I did another order with another KBC VISA Vision but still no news (no order mail, no cancel mail but I guess it can take a while...) Wondering how long the process normally takes I asked a few people on google+ community's and they all got there confirmation mail after +- 2 days.
So I guess mine will get bounced again...
And I ran out of creditcard :\
This sucks...
Any idea's?
Thx
You can try the KBC Mastercard. Or maybe I just got lucky?
ReplyDeleteI have now tried to order my Nexus 4 several times. I installed Hideman, which worked fine at first. I placed an order but it was cancelled because my creditcard adress was checked. I came as far as ordering again, though couldn't select my creditcard with dutch adress. Now I have a different creditcard but I can't order anymore. When I'm not logged into a google account I can access the german play store, put the Nexus in the shopping cart but when I log in then, I'm told Play store for devices is not available in my country yet. When I'm already logged in I get the same. Now I also tried Shellfire VPN as someone suggested above, but that gives the same result. Does anyone have an idea? I'd really like to order this phone!!!
ReplyDeleteThis seems to work for a KeyTrade Visa. Status: The order has been placed... Used shellfire VPN thanks for the tip @FunkStar_ I did have to remove the card from my existing GMail account (bound to a .be email address and used before to by apps) and create a new GMail account bound to a .net email address. All this via the VPN so the account creation process has no local IP (I hope :) Completed the delivery and billing address with the mailboxde.com address in combination with a German mobile phone number from a friend. That's all :) FYI if this is not working I'll jump in my car and get the phone myself from MediaMarkt in Germany!!! Ik hou jullie op de hoogte...
ReplyDeleteuntill now I only received the order confirmation. Nothing else although the store mentions to have GN 4 in stock... :(
DeleteWTF?! Pardon my French, but I just received this: Great news! Your order on Google Play has shipped!!
DeleteWoehoe. So on its way to MailboxDE
Wow nice!
DeleteI ordered my Nexus on March 13 and it wasn't shipped within a week so I contacted google, they had delivery issues again and now yesterday my order got cancelled, after two weeks :S
That is to bad...
DeleteMine is up and running. I'm loving it... hope you get a chance to reorder...
Great information!
ReplyDeleteJust what I needed.
I'm having trouble in setting up the proxy, though.
Do you have any tutorial on that?
Here’s a workaround I use, if you are fed up of being shut out of auctions because the eBay seller does not ship to your country. The same goes for online retailers who refuse to ship to your destination.
ReplyDeleteWhen you sign up with BPM, you get local shipping addresses in 6 countries.
Drop points include: USA, UK, Germany, France, Belgium and Luxembourg. You then use these for buying from whom you want, regardless of where the seller ships or not.
You then have all your purchases combined into one, even from the different countries, and use the parcel mail forwarding service to have everything sent home in only one shipment, wherever you are in the world!
Membership for renting these addresses and using the service is only 5€ per month.
You can check it out on http://www.bpm-lux.com
welll i am going to buy nexus 5 via google play Germany when it is released and i am wondering how to add the mailbox.de to Google wallet i mean is it necessary to add to name the line Mailboxde.com
ReplyDeletejohn Stewart, ID 13190 for example i fear that if they see a name like that will not ship ...
